Monitoring the GAME Plan

We finally had our meeting to fill out the surveys yesterday. Roughly two-thirds of the staff showed up. Two teachers commented that they wondered how we were going to have twenty people filling out surveys on my three classroom computers. (I have 21) There has clearly been some conversation amongst the other staff about the technology that I have. In fact I was approached about the tech mentor position for next year by the current tech mentor. She felt as though I was far more qualified and was uncomfortable continuing in the position. I'm not sure how I feel about taking on that responsibility. Because it is a new school, and she is doing a fine job I don't see a need to step in and take her place. There is a stipend for the tech mentor and the site coordinator for the surveys which I am already doing, but there are also more meetings that go along with it. I was a little afraid of letting people know about the things that I do with technology, because then you are approached more often when people have questions. At my old school, there were five of us that worked together as tech mentors. There was a bigger staff, but the workload was less because there were more of us to help out too. I guess we will see where it goes from here.

  1. Doug,

I think it is great that you were able to have your meeting with a good number of participants. Having good technical abilities is an asset you can share with your colleagues. It is also exciting and maybe even a little overwhelming that you were approached to train for the tech mentor position. Kudos to you! :) Will you have other meetings/trainings for interested teachers? Or is that something the tech mentor would do? Sounds like your GAME plan is moving right along!

  2. Doug,

I totally understand your apprehensiveness about the tech position. There is a finite amount of time available each week and for you to develop yourself it can become difficult - "chasing too many rabbits" is what my mom used to say. You sound like you are way ahead of the game in your building. I think if you can get a few more people on board and encouraged with access to ideas from other technologically active teachers and exposure to new tools you can create a network of cutting edge educators. The more heads you have working in that direction, the better off everyone will be. Is this something the current Tech Mentor and yourself can collaborate on?

  3. Doug,

I would be honored to be invited to be the Tech Mentor. It's nice that the current one recognizes that she may not be the best for the job. At the same time, I understand your hesitation. I, too, have a lot of technology in my background and didn't want people to know! Thankfully, I was able to set clear boundaries, and the rest of the staff respected that!

  4. Thanks to all!

After reading through the comments, I take two things away. The first is that I have something that I can share with those on my staff that have a need for technology help. The other is that I need to be sure to set clear limits and say "no" or "next week" when I really don't have the time to do something for someone else.
